PWAN’S POLITICAL MENTORSHIP AND BOOTCAMP PHOTOBOOK 3

Given the re-emergence of authoritarian regimes across Africa and several other countries around the world in the last decade, the concept of democracy has struggled to thrive in some of those countries. Nigeria has particularly suffered from the effects of poor leadership at all levels and the state of democracy in the country has remained constant in the last 10 years.

The country has struggled with the achievement of gender equality and representation at all levels including politics and governance. Although some notable strides have been made, patriarchy and cultural biases still hold the gap on equal representation of men and women in politics and governance.

To strengthen our democracy, women must contribute as equal stakeholders in democratic processes, and organizations such as PWAN are working collaboratively with other stakeholders to ensure that women’s voices are heard and inclusiveness in governance is achieved at all levels.
